Mortice locks come in various grades, ranging from basic 2 and 3 lever mortice locks, for interior doors, sheds and low security needs,
up to high security British Standard locks which abide by all insurance standards. Mortice locks are fitted into the side of doors with the
strike plate fixed to the frame, when the key is turned the bolt goes into the keep, this is when the door is locks.

On all front and back doors a mortice British Standard lock should be fitted, this more than anything to abide by your insurance companies requirements,
if a BS lock is not fitted to any exterior door, your insurance company can refuse to pay you out.

The requirements for a mortice that is fitted to your external doors, is that it abides by insurance recommendations, this means that it has to have hardened plates to protect against drilling, a minimum of 1000 differs and a bolt that throw at least 20mm and is either hardened or has rollers fitted through the bolt, to prevent cutting with a hacksaw. If you are fitting locks to interior doors or sheds etc. this requirement is not required, as it is really only for personal protection. Our Mortice Lock Fitting Service will always explain to you the best lock to fit, as mortice locks come in all different forms.

A mortice lock should always be backed up with a latch lock, on your front door, this is so that you can close your door and it will automatically latch. It is a good form of practise to fit a British Standard Dead Latching rim lock to your front door, as these cannot be slipped. if fitting together they can be keyed alike in order that they can be fitted together, this is done by fitting a euro profile deadlock, as shown. The locks shown are Egress locks, which means they can be fitted to multi tenant front doors, they cannot be locked from the inside.  For domestic front doors, key locks which lock from the inside, can be fitted.  Whatever lock is fitted our Mortice Lock Fitting GL7 Service will undertake it for you at a fair and reasonable price.
